OG session description:

LifeSciHub welcomes Hollie Heikkinen of iWorker Innovations and IPSE, the Association for Independent Professionals and the Self Employed, to discuss benefits in the age of the Gig Economy.  The gig economy is big enough now that solutions are emerging to meet the needs of gig workers.  Although the needs of independent consultants might be the same as full time employees, such as health insurance, the means to acquire health insurance are quite different.  Namely, we are individuals who, alone, don’t benefit from group rates, and the premiums aren’t subsidized by a parent company.

The situation in the US can be considered quite serious.  According to recent studies by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and researchers at Harvard and Princeton (Katz, Krueger) show that almost 10% of all workers are independent, approximately 15 million workers.  Also true is that 28.9 million non elderly Americans are uninsured.  Of them, 74% say they are uninsured because the cost of coverage is too high.

Luckily, solutions are emerging to address the specific needs of the independent workforce.  Few people are more informed on this topic here in the US than Hollie Heikkinen.  She will cover developments in health insurance products for independent workers as well as other benefits- life insurance, retirement products, even tuition benefits.  Bring your questions!  This session will be recorded for any member who can’t attend.
